The New Creation III

 The New Creation III

The New Creation 03

Sri Aurobindo and The Mother came to change the earthly life.
Sri Aurobindo said in His poem Evolution :
O thou who climbest from dull stone
Face now the miracled summits still unwon.
The first half of Evolution has been before us , the human beings — we have grown, step by step from  Matter, which is described by Sri Aurobindo as “dull stone” — we have maneuvered to become the humans through the prolonged and difficult course of Evolution — from the stone to the human. That is the story of the Advent of Man, amidst the stone and the plants and the animals.
And now, there are the new summits before us, which are still unwon — the summits of consciousness and existence : we shall have to face and conquer the new summits beyond the human existence and the human consciousness. We need to conquer the new heights of Consciousness, beyond all our limitations, all our present imperfections and incapacities, all our ignorance and darkness, and we need to have the miraculous capacities to transform ourselves for the New Creation, for the Advent of the New Man, the Superman, the Supramental Being.
That is the Truth — either we will have to achieve it or we will have to lose the struggle of existence and be doomed to the Abyss. That is what The Mother has said to us :
Men, countries, continents,
The choice is imperative — Truth or Abyss.
It is the Divine’s Will that the mankind shall be transformed, as said by Sri Aurobindo in Savitri:
The Maker shall recast us and impose
A plan of godhead  on the mortal’s mould
Lifting our finite minds to his infinite,
Youching the moment with eternity.
This transfiguration is earth’s due to heaven …
[Bk 1 Co 4 Savitri]

The New Creation II

The New Creation II

The New Creation 02

Sri Aurobindo and The Mother have assured us of Their help on the Way. Has not He told us so in the following words?

And yet I know my footprints’ track shall be

A pathway towards Immortality. [The Pilgrim of the Night]

He has asked us to find the secrets within and proceed towards the New Becoming. To show us the Way, Sri Aurobindo had to find out the Way himself, for it was an untrodden way, a New Way. He had to work hard, undertaking an untried spiritual research.

He who would bring the heavens here

Must descend himself into clay

And the burden of earthly nature bear

And tread the dolorous way. [God’s Labour: Sri Aurobindo]

And what did He tell us to do?

A voice cried, “Go where none have gone!

Dig deeper, deeper yet

Till thou reach the grim foundation stone

And knock at the keyless gate.”[God’s Labour: Sri Aurobindo]

Sri Aurobindo was Himself an Adventure of Consciousness, as Satprem called Him. In the language of His own epic poem Savitri, He was a ‘Voyager upon uncharted routes, fronting the danger of the Unknown and adventuring across enormous realms.’

A big change will come on earth — it has already started coming, since the 29th February 1956, when the Supramental Consciousness descended on earth, as The Mother declared .

Sri Aurobindo has said :

Often a lustrous inner dawn shall come

Lighting the chambers of the slumbering mind;

A sudden bliss shall run through every limb

And Nature with a mightier Presence fill.

Thus shall the earth open to divinity

And common natures feel the wide uplift,

Illumine common acts with the Spirit’s ray

And meet the deity in common things.

Nature shall live to manifest secret God,

The Spirit shall take up the human play,

This earthly life become the life divine.

The Mission for which Sri Aurobindo and The Mother came on earth can be clearly known from what is stated by ‘Savitri’ :

My soul and his indissolubly linked

In the one task for which our lives were born

To raise the world to God in deathless Light.

To bring God down to the world on earth

We came to change the earthly life to life divine. [Savitri]

The New Creation I

The New Creation I

The New Creation 01

A new creation from the old shall rise….  [Bk 3 Co 3 Savitri]

A  New Creation from  the old shall rise … so says Sri Aurobindo. The old humanity, the old earth, shall yield to the New Humanity, the new earth, which shall be on the way towards conquest of all darkness and divisions and decay and death, all ignorance and inconscience and inertia, all falls and failures and frustrations. The New Consciousness, the Supramental Consciousness, shall transform the mankind towards Light, towards Oneness, towards Knowledge and Wisdom and Truth, towards Perfection and Immortality. That is the consequence of what Sri Aurobindo and The Mother have done for the humanity and the earth.

Sri Aurobindo has said in Savitri :
A mightier race shall inhabit the mortal man’s world.
On Nature’s luminous tops, on the Spirit’s ground,
The superman shall reign king of life,
Make earth almost the mate and peer of heaven
And lead toward God and truth man’s ignorant earth
And lift towards godhead his mortality.

Let us ever remember Sri Aurobindo and The Mother and renew our Aspiration and our Hope for the New Way, for the New Consciousness and Being, for the Progress and Transformation towards the New Man, the New Race.

Sri Aurobindo is the Person, who has given the most hopeful meaning of the human existence, of the Creation. He has given us the greatest Hope, the greatest Dream, of Joy and Bliss and the Widest Consciousness and of an eternal, immortal existence. He was not satisfied with Moksha or Nirvana, nor did He ask us to be so satisfied. We will be transformed into an immortal Race, a new Race, who will not live in Darkness or in Ignorance or in Transience and Death.

He, the Avatar of the Supreme, granted with His signature of Tathastu [So be it] to the Vedic prayer of a few millennia:

Asato maa sadgamaya
Tamaso maa jyotirgamaya

Lead me from non-existence to Existence,
Lead me from Darkness to Light,
Lead me from Death to Immortality.

Sri Aurobindo said : So be it. And it is becoming So. He showed us the Way, the New Way, transcending and surpassing Moksha and Nirvaana. You need not leave the World, the Manifestation — for everything is He, the All-Existence. The Creation, the Manifestation, is His Will — can anyone go beyond His Will?  For, in everyone, He is manifest and He is hidden.

The Age of Religions is over

The Age of Religions is over

The Mother has said that the Age of Religions is over. She and Sri Aurobindo repeatedly proclaimed that Their Teaching is not a Religion, that Their intention was never to form or propagate any religion. With reference to Auroville, She has specifically declared that “Auroville is for those who want to live a life essentially divine but who renounce all religions whether they be ancient, modern, new or future.”

I am quoting below the oft-quoted declaration of the Mother relating to Auroville:

Auroville and the Religions

We want the Truth.
For most men, it is what they want that they label as truth.
The Aurovillians must want the Truth whatever it may be.
Auroville is for those who want to live a life essentially divine but who renounce all religions whether they be ancient, modern, new or future.
It is only in experience that there can be knowledge of the Truth.
No one ought to speak of the Divine unless he has had experience of the Divine.
Get experience of the Divine, then alone will you have the right to speak of it.
The objective study of religions will be a part of the historical study of the development of human consciousness.
Religions make up part of the history of mankind and it is in this guise that they will be studied at Auroville – not as beliefs to which one ought or ought not to adhere, but as part of a process in the development of human consciousness which should lead man towards his superior realization.

Research through experience of the
Supreme Truth
A life divine
Our research will not be a search effected by mystic means. It is in life itself that we wish to find the Divine. And it is through this discovery that life can really be transformed.
So, the Truth is that the Teaching of Sri Aurobindo and The Mother is not a Religion. We, Their followers, need not rejoice and follow the Religion of Sri Aurobindo and Mother very religiously, very devoutly, and begin conflicts with other religions, and remain devoutly stationed and fixed with the new ‘creed’ for another millennium, forgetting the Aim of the Progressive Realisation of the Supramental Transformation, forgetting any real progress as visioned by Sri Aurobindo and the Mother.

The Mother said on April 29, 1953:
Otherwise [if people sought for the truth], there would be no religion : there would be masters and disciples, people with a higher teaching and an exceptional experience. That would be fine. But as soon as the master is gone, what happens is that the knowledge he gave is turned into a religion. Rigid dogmas are established, religious rules are born, and all you can do is bow before the Table of the Law…. Luckily for all of you [children here], you have no religion. And I hope you will never have any, because that is closing the door on progress.”

Let me quote another note from the Mother on religion :

( A note to a visiting Western woman who wanted to teach in a “religious school.”)

One must not confuse a religious teaching with a spiritual teaching. Religious teaching belongs to the past and arrests progress, while spiritual teaching is the teaching of the future. It enlightens the consciousness and prepares it for the future realization.

Spiritual teaching is above religions and strives towards a total truth. It teaches us to come into direct contact with the Divine.

On April 29, 1961, the Mother replied to a disciple who asked whether a religion could be founded on Sri Aurobindo’s teachings. She wrote :

“…. Men are such fools that they can change anything at all into a religion, so great is their need for a fixed framework for their narrow thought and limited action. They do not feel secure unless they can affirm, ‘this is true and that is not’. But such an affirmation becomes impossible for anyone who has read and understood what Sri Aurobindo wrote. Religion and yoga are not situated on the same plane of the being, and spiritual life can exist in its purity only if it is free from all mental dogma.”

On April 3, 1957, the Mother stated as follows:

“A new religion would be something not only useless, but harmful. It’s a new life that has to be created ; it’s a new consciousness that has to be expressed. It is something that is beyond intellectual limits and mental formulas. It’s a living truth that must manifest.”

Again, the Mother stated on June 9, 1929 :

“It is often said that, if Jesus came back, he would not be able to recognize what he taught in the forms that have been imposed on it, and if Buddha were to come back and see what has been made of his teaching, he would immediately run back discouraged to Nirvana ! All religions have each the same story to tell. The occasion for its birth is the coming of a great Teacher of the world. He comes and reveals and is the incarnation of a Divine Truth. But men seize upon it, trade upon it, make an almost political organization out of it. The religion is equipped by them with a government and policy and laws, with its creeds and dogmas, its rules and regulations, its rites and ceremonies, all binding upon its adherents, all absolute and inviolable. Like the State, it too administers reward to the loyal and assigns punishments for those that revolt or go astray, for the heretic and the renegade….

This attitude is natural to the religious mind ; but it is just that which makes religion stand in the way of the spiritual life…. When you stop at a religious creed and tie yourself in it, taking it for the only truth in the world, you stop the advance and widening of your inner soul.”

Let us see what Sri Aurobindo tells us :

“How much stupidity and hatred men succeed in packing up decorously and labeling ‘Religion’ !

The quarrels or religious sects are like the disputing of pots, which shall be alone allowed to hold the immortalizing nectar. Let them dispute, but the thing for us is to get at the nectar in whatever pot and attain immortality.”

Sri Aurobindo further tells us in another occasion :

“… Then again, I don’t believe in advertisement except for books etc., and in propaganda except for politics and patent medicines. But for serious works it is a poison. It means either a stunt or a boom ― and stunts and booms exhaust the thing they carry on their crest and leave it lifeless and broken high and dry on the shores of nowhere ― or it means a movement. A movement in the case of a work like mine means the founding of a school or a sect or some other damned nonsense. It means that hundreds and thousands of useless people join in and corrupt the work or reduce to a pompous farce from which the Truth that was coming down recedes into secrecy and silence. It is what has happened to ‘religions’ and is the reason of their failure…”

Founding a new religion means repeating the same mistake that has happened in connection with all religions on earth ― the Truth that was coming down receded into secrecy and silence, leaving the ‘religions’ nowhere.

He says on August 18, 1935 :

“I may say that it is far from my purpose to propagate any religion, new or old, for humanity in the future. A way to be opened that is still blocked, not a religion to be founded, is my conception of the matter.”

To found a religion basing on the Teachings of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother, or to declare Their Teachings and thought and philosophy as a religion is an act of gross disobedience and deception to Sri Aurobindo and the Mother. It is a fall, a failure and a frustration of Their Teaching. It is act of rebellion.

Founding a religion will be creating an obstruction between the seeker and the Truth that is descending.

Let us understand it and stop from disobeying and deceiving THEM, from stopping the Truth that is still descending for us.
Let us not stop the Progress.

Let us not forget the Aim, the Purpose : the Supramental Manifestation on Earth. Let us not pull back and stop the March towards the New World, towards the New Horizon.

Human Progress III

Human Progress III

Let us dream of the New Horizon, the New World.
Let us march towards the New Horizon, the New World.
In our journey as human beings so long, we have committed enormous mistakes and follies, we have seen tremendous cruelties and massacres, we have seen ourselves engrossed in ignorance and dissipation, and as a consequence, we have most of the time found ourselves dwelling in darkness, with lots of sufferings and chaos and obscurity.
But there have always been some golden linings. Men have always tried to come out of this darkness, from this animal consciousness that they inherited from evolution. They have sought for Truth and Light and Love, for liberation from the bondage of death and diseases, of division and darkness. They have endeavored to bring joy and happiness amidst all sufferings and pains.
And there has always been the golden ray of Hope for men. At least some men have always burned the incense of Aspiration for progress, for all that is True, Good and Beautiful, all that is Divine, all that is from the Supreme. There has been some progress, in spite of all regressive movements. And there has always been some Descent from the Supreme Consciousness and Being amid this humanity living in darkness.
Hence, let us collect all that is golden in our harvest so far, since the beginning of the human journey, and march towards the New Horizon. It is not that we will leave this world and go elsewhere to find another planet in search of the New World. Nor should we become sannyasins or recluses. We need not retire into some forests or mountains. We will change this world.
We can see that this world, as it is now, is in an extremely bad state of affairs. Falsehood, hatred, selfishness, corruption, greed, deception, violence, cruelty, inhumanity, and hunger for power – these appear to be the ruling forces now. All the noble Ideals or Ideas that prevailed on earth and inspired many of our noble ancients or our forefathers, have, as it were, become obsolete. Look at history and the present day earth: ideologically, and in consciousness, men seem to have become pygmies.
We have been seeing destructions and wars throughout this earth. : In India, in USA, in Afghanistan and Iraq, and earlier, elsewhere. The entire human society is sitting on a heap of bombs – atomic or non-atomic. In relationships, we can no more find beauty and love and fellow feeling. In Arts and culture, vulgarity has almost replaced beauty.
In the name of religion, the people fight each other, and they are taking themselves farther away from the Divine, from spirituality.

Sri Aurobindo has said:
“The end of a stage of evolution is usually marked by a powerful recrudescence of all that has to go out of evolution.”

This earth is an evolutionary field. Evolution is the history of life’s manifestation on earth. This has been well said by Darwin. According to him, man is the consequence of this earthly evolution. But he did not proceed beyond the appearance of Homo Neanderthal. He said nothing about evolution after the appearance of man upon earth, or about the reason why man was evolved at all. His view was a scientific truth, within the material viewpoint of Science.
As Sri Aurobindo has said, the time has come when evolution must surpass man. Man is not the perfect being, not the complete being. But he has the aspiration and dream for becoming perfect, for becoming complete. Evolution aims at ultimately manifesting That which is the Source of this Manifestation, the Supreme Existence-Consciousness-Bliss (in Sanskrit and other Indian languages called Sat-Chit-Ananda or Sachchidananda), the Divine. Out of Man shall manifest the Superman. Man has to become the Base, the Instrument for the Advent of the Superman. He has to grow into the Superman. The purpose of the appearance of man must now be fulfilled, and man’s surpassing himself will do that. Man has to collaborate with the new evolution, or the evolutionary forces will ignore him and go beyond him and find out its own means.
No doubt, Science and logic stand guard against falsehood, superstition and ignorance. But Science discovers and finds only a partial aspect of the Truth. Reason and logic are not the only bases of Truth. And the integral seeker of the complete Truth, a true student of Philosophy realizes this.
Sri Aurobindo has said in ‘Thoughts and Aphorisms’:

Late, I learned that when reason died, then Wisdom was born; before that liberation, I had only knowledge.

What men call knowledge, is the reasoned acceptance of false appearances. Wisdom looks behind and sees. Reason divides, fixes details and contrasts them; Wisdom unifies, marries contrasts in a single harmony.

Man is not the final step in Evolution, in the Manifestation. How can something so incomplete, so imperfect, so ignorant and so incapable, as man is till now, be the last thing?
In fact, the last thing or the last stage will never come, as evolution will go on eternally, forever. But man has to proceed forward ahead, surpassing his present stage of incompleteness, imperfection. He has to know himself, strive towards Perfection and surpass himself. As it has been said earlier, the Superman shall emerge out of Man. Man has to surpass all the limits of mind and reason, scale newer and newer heights of Consciousness and ascend to Gnosis, the Supramental Consciousness, and then shall emerge on earth the supramental race. This is the Truth Sri Aurobindo has brought for us. We shall have to live for this Goal, this Truth.

The Mother told us also:
Blessed are those who take a leap towards the Future.
She advised us:
Ever remain young. Never stop striving towards Perfection.

Further, The Mother wrote on 25 September 1914, addressing the Divine Mother:
The Lord has willed and Thou dost execute:
A new Light shall break upon the earth.
A new world shall be born,
And the things that were promised shall be fulfilled.

Again, much later, She wrote, as the Divine Mother personified:
Lord, Thou hast willed and I execute:
A new Light breaks upon the earth.
A new world is born,
And the things that were promised are fulfilled.

And the New World is born, and we will have to bring it out physically, materially, in the real possibility.
You can live in either in search of pleasure and enjoyment, or otherwise for a definite purpose, which will bring you more fulfilments, more joy. The higher your purpose, the greater is the joy and fulfilment. The higher the Consciousness you aspire for, and the wider your consciousness, the more purposeful your life becomes, the greater is your joy. We may orient our endeavor, our way of life, towards limited personal happiness and satisfaction, or towards a greater and wider Joy and fulfilment, along with others, for others also, maybe with the whole of mankind, for the entire mankind, for higher values of Truth, Light, Wisdom, Beauty, Creativity, Goodness, Love, Wideness, Harmony and Peace, Total Well-being.
We can close all our doors and windows and forget the world. And the World will forget us and leave us self-imprisoned. And we can also open all our doors and windows and run into the meadow in front and look at the sunrise and listen to the music of the wind or of the birds, or see the play of the squirrels, or look at the flowers around, or smile at our fellow human beings, who have also come out of their grooves. We can attune ourselves to the world.
We may sleep in darkness or remain half-asleep in twilight, or otherwise be in joyous contemplation in moonlight or start discovering our world in sunlight. It is as we may choose.

Sri Aurobindo says:
“Unhappy is the man or the nation which, when, the divine moment arrives, is found sleeping or unprepared to use it, because the lamp has not been kept trimmed for the welcome and the ears are sealed to the call. But thrice woe to them who are strong and ready, yet waste the force or misuse the moment; for them is irreparable loss or a great destruction.”

The divine moment continues. We may say that the moment that began with Sri Aurobindo continues till the accomplishment of his work: evolution of Man beyond himself into a higher Consciousness, leading to the Advent of the Supramental Consciousness.
When the divine moment continues, should we go on sleeping? Should we continue in meaningless circles? Should we not try to contribute to the Great Work, though our portions may be small, very small?

Human Progress II

Human Progress II

My personal belief is in human progress and evolution. Man has the innate capacity to outgrow and master all his imperfections and darkness, and he should develop this and grow into a creative, constructive and divinized higher being. The human society should also grow accordingly and conquer all darkness within and without, surpassing all racial, religious, linguistic, political and other artificial barriers.

It may be said, following Sri Aurobindo :

Nature shall live to manifest secret God,
The Spirit shall take up the human play,
The earthly life become the life divine.

And let us follow The Mother in understanding Sri Aurobindo:

What Sri Aurobindo represents in the world’s history is not a teaching, not even a revelation; it is a decisive action direct from the Supreme.

The Mother has further said:

Sri Aurobindo came upon earth to teach this truth to men. He told them that man is only a transitional being living in a mental consciousness, but with the possibility of acquiring a new consciousness, the Truth-consciousness, and capable of living a life perfectly harmonious, good and beautiful, happy and fully conscious. During the whole of his life upon earth, Sri Aurobindo gave all his time to establish in himself this consciousness he called supramental, and to help those gathered around him to realise it.

The Mother has also said:

Sri Aurobindo belongs to the future; he is the messenger of the future. He still shows us the way to follow in order to hasten the realisation of a glorious future fashioned by the Divine Will.
All those who want to collaborate for the progress of humanity and for India’s luminous destiny must unite in a clairvoyant aspiration and in an illumined work.

Man has problems. He has sufferings, defeats, imperfections, incompleteness, failures, diseases, ignorance, darkness, inertia, animal hungers, dissatisfactions, sorrows and death. He is limited, imprisoned, in chains everywhere. And he finally succumbs to an unwelcome death.

But he questions his imperfections, incompleteness, ignorance, darkness, diseases, and even his death. He has an inborn aspiration to overcome all these and to have the conquest over all his imperfections and defeats. He has tried to fulfil this aspiration by his progress and growth in knowledge and use and application of sciences, foundation of philosophies and schools of thoughts, and researches into the spiritual domain, through political and social changes, reformations and revolutions, through economic changes, through industrial and agricultural reformations and growth, and through religions. There have been prophets, seers and sages from time immemorial, philosophers, scientists and socio-political thinkers, but Man find himself back at the square one. Some persons might have attained moksha [spiritual liberation] or nirvana or nearness to the heavenly Lord, but the trillions and trillions of human beings are at the same place, in front of the Sphinx.

As long as man continues to remain what he has been so long in the past fifty millennia or so, since the days of the Homo Sapiens, bound to his past and his limitations and imperfections and incapacities, his ignorance and darkness, there cannot be any hope for him.

He must solve the riddle of existence. He must surpass himself, cross his limitations, aspire to transcend himself and prepare himself for the new World.

Says the Mother :
Sri Aurobindo came on earth from the Supreme to announce the manifestation of a new race and a new world, the Supramental.

This is our Destiny, our true Goal: to prepare ourselves, to build ourselves for the advent of the new world, new race, new Humanity, to march towards the New Horizon, the New Creation.

If you are in search of Truth, of ever-growing Perfection, of the true Art and Science of human life, you are to follow the steps shown by The Mother and Sri Aurobindo towards the Supramental Manifestation on earth..

Human Progress I

Human Progress I

As Sri Aurobindo and The Mother has told, the earth is a field of Evolution, where the originally involved Divine Consciousness, Existence-Consciousness-Bliss, is evolving. The Evolutionary progress has started from Matter and presently, Man has been evolved out of the Ape. But that is NOT the end. Evolution goes on and now the next step is going beyond Mind to Supermind, to the supramental Consciousness and Force. Man has to go beyond. That is the Truth. If we do not cooperate with the Evolutionary march, we will be lost in the Abyss.

The Mother has said:

The choice is imperative: Truth or Abyss

Let us always remember that the choice is imperative.

And that is the Destiny of this earth, of mankind. Man has to reach this Goal. We have to live for this Future.

The Mother gave us another message:

Blessed are those who take a leap towards the Future.

The question is: What is this Future?

The Supramental Manifestation on earth is the Future. This will be through the human beings, if they cooperate. If you cooperate, you serve the Truth. Or else, the Creative Force will pass by you, ignore you, and fulfill its Goal through some other means.

Supermind is not a higher mind. It is a Higher Consciousness, surpassing all the stages and planes of Mind. In between our ordinary Mind and the Supermind, Sri Aurobindo speaks of four stages of Mind: the Higher Mind, the Illumined Mind, the Intuitive Mind, and then, the Overmind.  To begin with, Overmind is the highest stage where the mental consciousness could reach till the Advent of the Supermind. It is the Plane of the gods and goddesses. It is the plane, which the several Avatars of the Supreme manifested and represented on earth. It is the Consciousness of represented by Sri Krishna on earth, according to Sri Aurobindo. These planes need be defined and described further in details, but let us have patience ; we will look into this issue on another day.

The Mother has also advised us:

Ever remain young. Never stop striving towards Perfection.

She has also told us:

Man is the creation of yesterday. Sri Aurobindo came to announce the creation of tomorrow: the coming of the supramental being.

Let us all wait, see and wonder at this transforming reality materialising before our own eyes and we – the humanity – will have to adapt this Truth .

We shall have to make ourselves ready for the Transformation from the mental plane to the Supramental Plane. That is the Design of the Supreme Will That has originated the Universe.
